Been Stellar begin a new journey on warmly melancholic "Breakaway"
Been Stellar have been generating tremendous forward momentum since the 2024 release of their debut LP, Scream From New York, NY, a modern alt rock classic that pushed the format in thrilling new directions. The band’s latest single, “Breakaway” is a subtly fuzzy, melodic anthem that burns with a vibrant incandescence like the final rays of a Manhattan solstice settling neatly along the streets lining the City’s towering caverns.
“Breakaway” is imbued with a familiar approachability tinted with just a hint of saudade, like an affectionate parting embrace shared with an old friend on a bustling subway platform. In that briefest of moments a bubble is formed where time itself freezes like a Polaroid, a memory coalescing in real-time as the surrounding world carries on about its business. “Breakaway” exists in the effervescent moment when that bubble bursts, as fingertips separate and a final glance is shared between the closing doors of the train car. A knowing smile, softly holding back a swelling of emotion from deep within, closes a chapter dogeared to be revisited when thumbing through the catalog of memories representing the branching choices of a life lived with freedom and affluent with the accumulation of love along the way.
Scenic moments of passing urban sprawl awash in sepia sunsets play against the band arrayed along the expansive horizon amidst the tumbling collision of the natural world and weary train cars resting, perhaps permanently, on overgrown lengths of track. The Ben Turok directed video has a sensation of lived-in tangibility that mirrors the hopeful melancholy of “Breakaway” to grand affect, underscoring the junction of past and future with locomotive symbolism and the organic wildness of the natural world. “Breakaway” is a fresh start for Been Stellar, one full of the promise of a new path toward brilliant destinations just beyond the next station.
