Sloth is one of the seven deadly sins, perhaps the most deadly, as the slippery slope of laziness represents a slow deterioration of the mind and body that leaves little behind but a dry and cracked channel of existence where once flowed rivers of ambition. Repeatedly indulging in the temptation to do absolutely nothing initiates a cycle of personal neglect that can be difficult to escape from. Finding motivation can be an elusive concept, even for those not within the grips of Sloth's slow strangulation. Cindy Cane is on a mission to battle debilitating lethargy with their latest high-energy single, "Exorcize," a self improvement anthem for the leather-and-latex set; Suzanne Somers meets Siouxsie Sioux.
Swelling to life with a brief intro that sets the stage like the coming attractions bumper on a rented VHS workout tape, "CC INTRO" is all heady analog synths and an electronic drum fill that inspires immediate cravings of "I want my MTV." There's a brief pause populated with only the faintest cassette hiss before "Exorcize" begins in earnest - a pummeling onslaught shot through with a potent dose of motivational adrenaline that blasts the cobwebs away with sweat-soaked neon intensity. Crystalline keys shimmer over rhythmic electronic percussion, propelling the track with the single-minded focus of a cinematic training montage as the protagonist transforms from zero-to-hero in a matter of minutes. The hook is absolutely massive, a punchy and vivacious shout along chant with animated backing vocals that ratchet up "Exorcize" into bouts of high-intensity intervals to really get the blood pumping.
Cindy Cane is known for their theatrically vampiric gothwave which initially seems at odds with "Exorcize"'s aerobic arrangement. But beneath the glistening surface is a simmering darkness that is uniquely Cindy. When it comes to sinful delights Cindy Cane has always fully embraced the allure of lustful pursuits, from their earlier single "Be My Nightmare" through their androgenous stage attire and makeup. Peak carnal performance requires a body that is in top condition, and so Cindy Cane rejects Sloth's sedentary in favor of physical fitness to better indulge in a life lived deliciously, exorcizing demons through the ritualistic power of aerobic dance. "Exorcize" proves that Cindy Cane is possessed of a flexibility that allows them to contort gothic constructs into thrilling new positions while preserving the seductive magnetism of all-consuming darkness.
