Death Valley Girls conjure the mysticism and resilience of rock n roll on "Sisters of the Moon" b/w "Fire And Brimstone"

2025 has been off to a rough start for a lot of Angelenos in the aftermath of the unprecedented wildfires that ravaged the city just after the New Year, triggering a range of emotions as residents supported their neighbors and communities to embark unified on the path to rebuilding homes and lives. For those directly impacted, art can be a healthy way to deal with the devastation, and Death Valley Girls have banded together in song to celebrate eternal resiliency unscarred by the flames.
“Sisters Of The Moon” comprises the final minutes of Fleetwood Mac’s 1979 album Tusk that represented the famously tumultuous band exploring the experimental fringes of their collective creativity. The song is a ghost story of sorts, confronting spectres of long buried truths abruptly exhumed on the other side of the looking glass.
Bonnie Bloomgarden enlists a roster of friends for Death Valley Girls’ take on this underappreciated classic, accenting the otherworldly track with additional dimensions of heady mysticism that draw out new depth from the impressionistic prose. Arriving in flowing robes of black, the Sister of The Moon embodies a myriad of concepts encompassing darker themes of death, addiction, and temptation but also of community, acceptance, and self-actualization. Her offer is one of balance, shimmering ephemeral as a reflection of oneself and possible futures as a member of an umbral sisterhood. In the wake of natural disaster succumbing to dispair can be easy, but the Sister of The Moon offers a way forward, dancing along the razor’s edge still clad in the vestments of the dark but celebrating the power of resilience born from spiritual duality.
An incendiary rendition of Link Wray’s “Fire And Brimstone” occupies the B-side, juxtaposing terrifying religious imagery with the secular ecstasy of the power of rock n roll. Originally written as an allegory for confronting personal demons and seeking an offer of salvation amidst an onslaught of hellish trials, Death Valley Girls take Wray’s word as gospel, delivering “Fire And Brimstone” as an eyewitness account of actual fiery devastation. Bloomgarden and friends imbue Wray’s spartan shuffle with Bowie-like boogie and expand the singular narrative into a harmonized chorus of souls aligned as one on the path towards building a brighter, stronger tomorrow.
