Electric Jaguar Baby roars back with acid soaked “Hitmaker”
French power duo Electric Jaguar Baby made waves with their super limited debut LP, a righteous slab of neo-stoner rock that took inspired risks with the genre's familiar formula of crunchy riffs and deep, sexy grooves. Returning with an all new single, EJB prove once again they've got what it takes to run with the pack with the colossally thick "Hitmaker."
Much like their previous work, "Hitmaker" is all supercharged scuzz and colossal prehistoric stomp. This is electric blues amped to 11 with killer harmonies on the hook that hides a surprising melody among the driving rhythm. Sure they wear their influences on their paisley pattered sleeves, but EJB's dedication to the craft and abject authenticity keep them from being labeled as just another Johnny-come-lately, and unique flourishes add fresh accent to the proceedings.
The accompanying video is an acid soaked psychedelic fever dream that recalls the terrifying magnetism of Wonka's ferry of terror. Interspersing snippets of vintage b-cinema with kaleidoscopic footage of peace, love, and apocalyptic nightmares, "Hitmaker" juxtaposes the eternal allure of sex with the inevitability of death to great effect. Thematically it's a little paint-by-numbers, but the video is very well executed and pairs perfectly with the oversized beats and heavy grooves - it's a hell of a lot of fun.
Electric Jaguar Baby's sophomore LP Psychic Death Safari is out October 7th on Rebel Waves Records and available for preorder. Follow the band on Instagram for the latest.
