Fomies bring helter-skelter energy to acid-fried heavy psych rager "Colossus II"

Hailing from the picturesque alpine lake country of western Switzerland, Fomies take an apocalyptic, acid-fried approach to modern heavy psych exemplified in their latest single, “Colossus II.”
Much like their peers Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Thee Oh Sees, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Fomies embrace a helter-skelter mechanical mindset that propels their fuzzed out visions of kaleidoscopic dystopia on a non-stop hellride into total sonic annihilation. “Colossus II” melds an insistent circadian rhythm section with downtuned riffs to build a doomy substrate for a manic, spring-loaded lead guitar attack that bounces with anxious energy between rubbery basslines. The overall seismic heft of the track plays wonderfully against the sensation of skittering restlessness like a swarm of insects crawling over the pulsating surface of a brain straining to break free from the confines of perception onto an expanded plane of a wonderous and terrifying new reality.
Juxtaposing visions of modern hedonism and freeform humanity with the overpowering grandeur of religious art and Renaissance architecture, director Radiana Pucicottola imbues a sense of multidimensionality to human existence, breaking down the barriers between vibrant earthly pleasures and the cold expanse of spiritual infinity. Searing infrared photography captures the smoldering auras of a pair of protagonists on a secular pilgrimage from carnival to catacombs, a metaphor for the totality of life burning brightly against a backdrop of eternal slumber.
Liminality is out April 11 on Taxi Gauche Records. Pre-order the record here and stream “Colossus II” on Spotify. Follow Fomies on Instagram.
