Frankie and the Witch Fingers unleashed a 'Trash Classic' at Permanent Records Roadhouse
In a triumphant conclusion to a pond-hopping trio of dates in celebration of the release of their incendiary new studio album Trash Classic, Frankie and the Witch Fingers unleashed apocalyptic mayhem for an ardent hometown crowd at Permanent Records Roadhouse on Saturday night.
Trash Classic a zeitgeist record that confronts hot button topics from economic malaise to technological paranoia with the fervent insistence of sonic revolutionaries slicing at the soft underbelly of modern day culture with intent to disrupt, deflate, and depose institutionalized inequalities that repress the human spirit with soulless indifference. But despite all the heady proclamations, Frankie and the Witch Fingers keep the proceedings buoyant, imbuing the band’s colossally dense helter-skelter psychedelia with a macrodose of DEVO-esque new wave mania and a propulsive sensation of unstoppable forward momentum that blazes like an array of scattershot fireworks.
As the early crowd filtered in, DJ Dennis Owens warmed the joint up with a nonstop hit parade of deep cuts and heady nugs that mined the depths of classic rock and soul with the curatorial expertise of a seasoned maestro, inspiring shimmies and shakes in anticipation of the evening’s main event.
And what an event it was! To attend a Frankie and the Witch Fingers show is to bear witness to the unrelenting fury of a psychedelic dervish discharged without restraint upon a glittering landscape of jagged glass, creating a kaleidoscopic maelstrom of sound and aggression leveling everything in its path with absolute impunity. This was especially true within the intimate confines of Permanent Records Roadhouse as every single inch of available floorspace was whipped into a frothy mosh the moment the very first notes of deteriorated electric insanity exploded from the PA.
The sheer magnitude of Frankie and the Witch Fingers’ collective skill was on full display as the band expertly shifted from manic motorik rhythms to colossal grooves with the precision focus of a trained starpilot flipping through the manual 4-speed gearbox of a rocket propelled muscle car on a collision course with the heart of the sun. Fresh rippers off Trash Classic bumped and jostled against tracks that spanned the band’s catalog, coalescing into a whiplash tour-de-force of ultraconcentrated kinetic energy that ricocheted around the room in time with the beat as air itself seemed to reverberate in response.
As furiously as it began, the band’s set reached its conclusion like the abrupt passing of raging tempest. The jubilant crush of bodies, sweaty and beaming in the aftermath of communal ecstasy at the alter of the abyss, raised their voices in adoration as the lights came up, revealing even the band themselves awash in the pure joy of an experience conducted and shared with mythological significance, a celebration of art and achievement and an undisputed Trash Classic.
