Heaven or Las Vegas: HNRY FLWR romances the Void in retro kitsch 'Something From Nothing'
Channeling the cultish weirdness of public access televangelism with the new age ambiguity of Silver Lake spirituality, HNRY FLWR returns with a new single that succinctly summarizes the outsized persona while laying fresh ground on the road towards their debut full-length LP, Visions Of The Daytime Moon.
Funky basslines intermingle with jazz flute and a shuffling rhythm section accented by hand claps and gospel vocal harmonies that set “Something From Nothing” up neatly as communal experience, an excerpt from a feel good sermon that that forgoes preachiness in favor of an elevated praise chorus celebrating the divinity that exists within us all. Expertly amalgamizing the polyester trappings of a bygone era with refreshingly current sensibilities and a modern outlook on personal resiliency, HNRY FLWR succeeds where Arctic Monkeys have abjectly failed over the course of their past two albums by not wallowing in overwrought and dated compositional miasma, instead embracing an infectious effervescence that imbues a similarly retro-worshipping starting point with a level of charming authenticity that Turner & Co. have failed to capture. “Something From Nothing” is an blissful disco-infused yacht-rock bop that elevates the spirit while retaining a healthy amount of meaningful substance.
From the soft-focus marquees of Fremont Street to the empty expanse of the western desert to the kitschy intimacy of a midcentury motel, the Melanie Chambers and OTIUM directed video for “Something From Nothing” follows our protagonist on a personal journey of self-discovery, bedecked in full Nudie Suit regalia complete with bolo tie. After gambling away a final, crumpled dollar fed dejectedly into the waiting mechanical maw of a one-armed bandit, HNRY FLWR strikes the jackpot – romancing the Void within across a series of vignettes that represent the agnostic ecclesiastic’s journey from depths of despair to the mountain peak of self-actualization. A soulful pilgrimage of the self that opens the doorway to acceptance and salvation, the most essential manifestation of love’s divine power to heal.
“Something From Nothing” is streaming now on Spotify. Visions Of The Daytime Moon will be available in December 2023. Follow HNRY FLWR on Instagram.
