Hermanos Gutiérrez’s latest single is a hypnotically mediative expression of open-road freedom and the unscripted magic uncovered by embracing the otherworldly wonder of life’s journey and our tiny place within the vast cosmos.
The hard-working Gutiérrez brothers earned their stripes with 2022’s El Bueno Y El Malo, a spaghetti-western influenced LP steeped in heavy mysticism and Andean-sized reverb. Not ones to rest on their laurels, the duo is preparing to introduce their follow up album with a new single and video that showcases the undeniable magnetism of the Hermanos Gutiérrez sound as a celebration of the brothers’ cultural roots and philosophical approach to songwriting.
“Until We Meet Again” generally follows in the footsteps of Hermanos Gutiérrez established repertoire, using their instrumental twin-guitar alchemy and cinematic compositions as guideposts along a sonic pilgrimage that doesn’t hesitate to waver from the path on its way toward a familiar destination. It’s a contemplative arrangement akin to watching a sunrise extend rays of sepia-tinted warmth along the night-chilled landscape, stirring the body and soul with the promise of a new day that taps into the most primal of instincts and emphasizes the intangible connection of all living things on this plane of existence and beyond. There is power in these chords, but not the youthful kind that crackles with electric fury or burns with immeasurably hot passions. Hermanos Gutiérrez tap into something more ancient, as grand and enduring in their venerated wisdom as the towering Andes themselves, a sound that has existed in one form another since the dawn of time and will remain to echo across the ages for eternities to come.
The hitchhiking brothers link up with a mysterious stranger piloting a turquoise Mustang along rural desert highways fringed with purple mountain majesty in a video travelogue directed by Robert Schober. Delivered with the slow intimacy of a late-night fireside conversation based on half-truths and plausible fictions, the story unfolds amidst subtly saturated natural vistas and textural analog film grain - an accurate translation of Hermanos Gutiérrez’s sound into a visual medium. Culminating in a wonderous encounter with a supernatural display of lights, the band’s companion transcends this mortal plane to become one with the universe, the brothers’ combined fretwork serving as a harmonious a conduit for pure spiritual enlightenment.
