Embodying the laid back, beachside mentality of their idyllic coastal hometown, Hockey Dad have mastered the art of crafting catchy tunes that bundle heady concepts within deceptively breezy presentations. The band’s latest single, “Safety Pin,” is no exception, addressing modern aging with resigned, yet positive, disposition.
Hockey Dad’s surf rock heritage is front and center, with a day-dreamy guitar riff and shuffling beat layered over a bassline that moves with the casual inevitability of a bead of condensation working its way down the outside of an ice cold bottle of Tooheys. “Safety Pin” is the embodiment of the near-universal sound of easy good times, recognized and appreciated from white sand beaches to friendly watering holes and cozy dives situated in all corners of the globe. The track has a sensation of approachability as warm as the afternoon sun and the type of familiarity typically reserved for old friends meeting to reminisce on the halcyon days of youth spent carefree upon the shore.
This is where Hockey Dad’s brilliance truly shines, setting up the composition’s inherent comfortability as a vehicle for the track’s deeper ruminations on accepting the process of growing older and retaining personal connections to help us keep it all together when things feel like they’re about to break down. From every day stressors of never having enough time to packing on literal and figurative weight, Hockey Dad recognizes that it is our friends and loved ones who make the endless grind worthwhile and bear the Herculean burden of holding our emotional contents in when everything falls to bits. As much as others are there for us, we too are responsible for helping those we care about endure, an endless chain of safety pins clipped together into a makeshift chainmail shirt - communal armor against the slings and arrows of life.
Rebuild Repeat is available June 14 via Farmer and the Owl. Pre-order on limited vinyl or pre-save here. Stream “Safety Pin” on Spotify and follow Hockey Dad on Instagram.
