Julia & The Squeezettes craft an all-star take on post-hardcore classic "Cue Cards"

Forming with the spontaneity of unfiltered creative electricity, Julia & The Squeezettes combines the formidable talents of The Coathangers’ Julia Kugel, The Paranoyds’ Staz Lindes, chief Death Valley Girl Bonnie Bloomgarden, and prolific kit basher Rikki Styxx for an all-star take on “Cue Cards,” an underground classic originally by post-hardcore legends, Lync.
With only a single full-length LP to their discography, Lync cemented their place in alternative music history with the brilliantly inventive These Are Not Fall Colors, a gritty and authentic album that adapted poetic lyricism and muscular instrumentals into a heart-wrenchingly widescreen depiction of youth and young manhood in the waning days of the 20th Century.
Julia & The Squeezettes bring a fresh perspective to the album’s standout track, “Cue Cards,” adapting the original’s simmering frustrations and confrontational undercurrent into a delicately rendered interpretation that offers a comforting shoulder to a friend in need through communal acceptance and sympathetic understanding. Springing into motion on a steady foundation of spritely basslines and hopeful percussion, “Cue Cards” reaches for the light with vocal harmonies over a softly inviting bed of keys and brightly patinaed guitar. In a moment when Los Angeles is struggling to rediscover a semblance of normalcy in the wake of unprecedented devastation and loss, the inclusive camaraderie of Julia & The Squeezettes’ vision of “Cue Cards” summons the strength to overcome adversity at any scale.
