L.A. Witch find electric clarity on angular post-punk rallying cry "777"

L.A. Witch have long carried the torch of heady, Gun Club-adjacent psychedelic rock, playing with fire against a thematic backdrop of love and lust and longing to impressive affect. With their latest single, “777,” the band peels back the dense layers of reverb that defined the sound of their earlier releases, introducing a brilliant level of clarity and a fresh approach imbued with the shadowy, angular nature of 1980s post punk.
Jangly guitars are high and tight in the mix, channeled through a haze of high-definition static that crackles like the surface of a cathode ray tube fixed on the otherworldly transmissions emanating from the farthest reaches of channel zero. Insistent percussion shuffles across the cold flagstones of a sonic mausoleum, instigating the interred to rise and writhe to basslines that undulate in the dark like tendrils of eternal romance reaching out for connection across the void. Ephemeral vocals beckon hauntingly over misty moors, a siren’s song heralding the virtues of those fallen in the pursuit of a higher calling, ensuring their deeds and actions echo across the ages, inspiring generations of ideological crusaders to band together and take up the banners of righteous resistance.
Beyond the eternal damnation heralded by the of the mark of the beast lies the random lottery of good fortune, but one must endure the suffering of 666 before cashing out the jackpot that rolls along with “777.”
DOGGOD is out April 4 on Suicide Squeeze. Pre-order and pre-save the album here. Stream “777” on Spotify and follow L.A. Witch on Instagram.
