Miranda and The Beat lean into vintage spooky vibes for their latest single 'Concrete'
Miranda and The Beat lean into vintage spooky vibes for their latest single "Concrete," a skittering, ramshackle thrill ride that moves in fits and starts like reanimated skeletons dancing with stop-motion locomotion over the cracks and crevices of Brooklyn back alleys.
A notable shift from the band's signature smoky soulful sound, this fresh venture into seemingly uncharted territory was presaged back in 2020 when Miranda and The Beat released the Halloween-themed stalker track "Mr. Monster" in collaboration with Bipolar's Obash. With incredible dexterity, Miranda and The Beat navigate "Concrete" around around the traps and pitfalls of flash-in-the-pan novelty by cranking the track's energy fully to 11. Punk vocals tear across a manic beat possessed of a rubbery bassline and nervous percussion, punctuated with squealing guitars and a chorus of disembodied voices that press in with claustrophobic tenacity from both channels.
The majority of "Concrete"'s camp is derived from borrowing the striking introduction from the Vincent Price Halloween classic House On Haunted Hill for an animated collage of a video that includes footage from the 1903 silent film The Monster, a proto-horror conceptual short film depicting the macabre reanimation of an Egyptian princess, interspersed among disjointed bones and whirling DIY animations. Setting the stage with such iconic pieces of cinematic history is a bold move but works in the band's favor by establishing a baseline from which they can craft their own narrative about the eerie reality of a nocturnal existence among the haunts and hollows of Brooklyn's shadiest dives.
With sly references to 10th Street and TV Eye, is the video an allegory for the once vibrant Brooklyn music scene slowly lurching back to life after the mortal impact of COVID venue closures, or a statement of reinvention from a band finding a new sound amidst the tattered flyers and stickers on disparate telephone poles like the headstones of bands long past? Perhaps a little of both, but the new sound of Miranda and The Beat is sure to raise the dead from the concrete catacombs of a city that has felt too silent for too long.
