More Fatter proves true love can be found in the pastry case on delectably flaky “Croissant Queen”
Novelty tracks are particularly difficult to pull off. There’s a nearly imperceptible line of demarcation between parody and sincerity that needs to be carefully tread in order to effectively stick the landing. More Fatter are no strangers to this challenge, having cheekily integrated comedic elements of varying degrees into their growing discography. The band fully takes the plunge on their latest release, an infectious ode to modern romance and the iconic French pastry, "Croissant Queen."
Drawing undeniable comparisons to pop-rock standard bearers Scissor Sisters and Under The Influence Of Giants and the wry sense of humor of We Are Scientists, “Croissant Queen” sticks closely to the recipe for a track that’s as light, crispy, and perfectly baked as its delectable namesake. Rubberband basslines bounce alongside upbeat percussion, spiked with funky guitar licks that catch every deliciously composed crumb. Falsetto vocals shine like a glassy egg wash, perfectly polished and gleamingly irresistible for a disco sheen that will have the dancefloor begging for a second helping.
What makes the track truly work is the fact that More Fatter plays it straight the entire time, fully committing to the inherent absurdity but honestly relatable nature of their unconventional metaphor. Spinning a yarn that deftly swaps one type of snack for another, More Fatter finds plenty of similarities in the fleeting satisfaction of a weekend fling and the over-too-soon buttery pleasures of a morning-after delicacy. Double-entendres like “take you out overnight, I feel you rising” gets the juices flowing in more ways than one, a celebration of carnal appetites from the lips to the loins delivered with an effervescence that bubbles over excitedly like champagne bottles popped at a bottomless brunch, dizzyingly intoxicating and awash in the warm late morning sun. After the plate's been licked clean and every morsel consumed More Fatter succumbs to the realization that any greater commitment from this dessert is impossible because, after all, “you’re my croissant queen, baby, ooh you’re flaky flaky.”
While overall a straightforward conceptual adaptation, the Daniel Rashid directed video still finds plenty of space to mine the metaphor for more laughs and even some surprising moments with big-screen ready photography by Avi Kaye. Chronicling the courtship between man and patisserie with a series of vignettes drawing inspiration from sappy rom-coms to ubiquitous memes, our protagonist's dalliance with delicacy forms a near perfect narrative arc mirroring the modern realities of dating for those with a very specific taste in carbs and partners. From the meet-cute to the eat-cute, Rashid's vision for "Croissant Queen" pulls off the Gondry-esque feat of not only providing a simple visual companion to the track, but a separate work that contributes to the overall artistry as an irrevocably essential component of the whole, elevating both in the process.
