N8NOFACE values true connection on inventive "Mind Like Mine"
N8NOFACE defies categorization as few artists can credibly do, aggregating a shotgun blast of disparate genres and influences into a thoroughly unique style that consumes everything from punk and noise to hip-hop and indie, pulverizing preconceptions into something so individually realized and undeniably magnetic it’s impossible to ignore his burgeoning cultural impact. As prolific as he is inventive, N8NOFACE has released a total of 5 EPs so far this year with no indications of slowing down. The latest of these, When We’re Gone, is a masterclass in post-post-punk attitude featuring the stand-out single “Mind Like Mine.”
Bouncing along on a rubbery bassline and skittering percussive foundation, “Mind Like Mine” occupies a more laid-back corner of N8NOFACE’s diverse catalog, merging the roughneck authenticity of Sleaford Mods with the unflappable working-class optimism of The Streets. Lines are delivered with a droll affability, indicative of the artist’s confidence in his own abilities and in the deep personal connection felt with the object of his affections, describing the pair’s impeccable compatibility in reverent detail. Nervous guitar licks dropkick turn of the millennium indie sleaze cool directly into the 2020s as N8NOFACE waxes like a streetwise Shakespeare composing sidewalks sonnets, buzzing on the dopamine rush of a true love.
Shot by Mark Lowe and edited by Chito Tafy with the accompaniment of live instrumentation on crisp white seamless, “Mind Like Mine” features animated line drawings by Michael McGinty that morph and skew into a sketched-out rendition of N8NOFACE’s native LA environs and swirling creative imagination, deconstructing the boundaries between each into an actively evolving, hyper-stylized day-in-the-life narrative. In video form “Mind Like Mine” is whimsical and playful interpretation of a mind at peace with itself and a celebration of sharing that inner peace with a companion who embodies a perfectly aligned, mutual weirdness.
