Night Beats serve up a thick slab of buttery psych on mesmerizing 'Hot Ghee'

Folding in heady sonic motifs steeped in traditional Eastern atmospherics, Night Beats accent their already potent brand of indie psych with sounds and styles sourced from all corners of the globe for their latest single, “Hot Ghee”. Named after a form of clarified butter used in everything from cooking to marriage ceremonies, “Hot Ghee” makes a tangible link between the physical and the spiritual by opening the door to enlightenment on irresistibly savory sounds spread generously thick over both hemispheres of the mind.
“Hot Ghee” is a lo-fi fuzzbomb exploding into a slow-motion miasma of smoky percussion and exotic guitar, stoned immaculate on a heavy funk undercurrent that places the track at an interdimensional intersection of body and soul radiating outward into blissful infinity. A rolling intro sets the stage before dropping into a loose groove that effortlessly carries throughout the track, building toward a powerful apex of paisley print philosophy before reclining back into comfortable repose amongst the layered instrumentation and an outro that brings the track right back to its structural origins.
Deceptively simple, the video for “Hot Ghee” is awash in symmetrical patterns and vivid colors that move and shift with mesmerizing intensity. Danny Lee Blackwell remains the primary focus amidst the structured psychedelia, a constant presence that anchors the otherworldly impressionism with a serene sense of omnipotent intimacy. The presentation is important, aesthetically setting the stage for Night Beats’ forthcoming LP, Rajan. Taking its title from Blackwell’s own family name in a semi-autobiographical expression of the wide-ranging influences that define both the man and the band, as well as honoring the familial ties.
Rajan releases July 14 via Suicide Squeeze. Pre-order the album here and follow Night Beats on Instagram.
