Some Days Are Darker’s songcraft is emboldened by a fearlessness to not only express but to wholly embody a romanticized ideal brought to life in full gothic splendor as a celebration of the elemental force that is true love. The band’s latest single, “Devotion,” burns with the unquenchable passions that arise when willingly lost within the arms and affections of another, completely surrendered to the spiritual presence of a love that penetrates beyond the flesh to illuminate the darkest recesses of the soul.
Dominated by a driving bassline that pounds with the insistence of a furiously beating heart, “Devotion” rolls on waves of thunderous palpitations that break upon the dancefloor in abject adoration. Widescreen atmospherics drape the rhythm in sensuous synth, shot through with crystalline guitar like Eros’ arrows rendered in beams of light reflected off the mirrored facets of a prismatic globe suspended in the black, seeking their path through the fog to land upon glistening bodies entwined and yearning for the fulfilment of meaningful companionship, if only for the night.
A love born in shadow may retreat from dawn’s golden splendor, but what is done in the dark echoes in eternity. The union of souls remain bound by their oath of midnight matrimony, fasting through the day in anticipation of feasting once more on the secular sacrament of total ecstasy.
