Strange Lot forecast meteorological psychedelia on vaporous "Rain and Fog"
Strange Lot show off their knack for substantial psychedelia on their latest single, “Rain and Fog,” a low pressure system of billowing sound and static blanketing the landscape in a dreamlike haze shot through with incredible vibrancy.
B-side to the brilliantly acerbic “Hatin’ You,” the appropriately titled “Rain and Fog” is enshrouded in a misty miasma that obfuscates shuffling rhythms and circadian riffs behind a wall of comfortingly anxious fuzz recalling early Jesus And Mary Chain fractured by a creeping sensation of menacing dread a-la The Black Angels, and tempered by the untouchable cool of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Prismatic flourishes of analog synth pierce the veil with the sweeping majesty of a distant lighthouse, beckoning wayward souls along a safe path toward salvation between jagged outcroppings of angular feedback.
The Stellina Stampouli directed video is a deceptively simple affair, at first blush a straight-up performance recording of the band against a seamless white background, adrift within a liminal space and dusted with a fine layer of static that imbues the subtle imagery with the otherworldly nature of an analog TV broadcast ricocheted off orbiting relays to the humming receptors of a lonely cathode ray tube glowing in the corner of a darkened room. Punctuated by explosions of Pollock pandemonium, the band plays it cool under a shower of technicolor toner that splatters the monochromatic presentation with a lively playfulness wonderfully at odds with the track’s atmospheric heft.
