The Hives unleashed maximum rock n roll fury at penultimate US show with support from Kate Clover
Dormant for over a decade since the release of 2012’s Lex Hives, Sweden’s prodigal sons The Hives returned in 2023 to once again claim their rightful place as the greatest band ever to exist. A new album, The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons, supported by an expansive world tour that brought The Hives to corners of the Earth both far and wide found The Champagne of Bands still fully committed to the same type of full throttle mania that defined their initial rise to prominence at the turn of the millennium. On the penultimate night of their US tour, The Hives graced the tiny stage at The Belasco and presented to the audience the gift of maximum rock and roll.
Kate Clover began the evening with a full clip of lean, mean punky rock that launched out of the gate with a no-nonsense attitude and full-bore sense of forward momentum that ripped like a white-knuckle car chase through a celluloid desert expanse. Dressed in scarlet and leopard with the stage presence of a West Coast Debbie Harry and flanked by a smartly besuited band, Clover and Co. cut dashing figures as they unleased a blistering ruckus possessed of a fiery spirit as incendiary as a freshly lit match, sharper than switchblades, and dramatic as wingtip mascara. Clover’s ultra-muscular set was unflappably cool, radiating an aura of assertive confidence and undeniable magnetism.
With impeccable punctuality, The Hives took the stage at exactly 9:00pm sharp. These five gentlemen take their work seriously. They have a job to do, and they do it very, very well. Brimming with bravado backed with unparalleled skill, The Hives delivered an effortlessly peerless rock show that hypercompressed their dynamic catalog into a take-no-prisoners high-energy greatest hitlist. Brilliantly audacious banter punctuated each platinum plated outburst, stringing together songs with stream-of-consciousness delirium that egged the crowd on to ever wilder demonstrations of hedonistic revelry reflective of the boundless stamina and torrential enthusiasm exhibited by the band. To bear witness to The Hives is to willingly bask in the unmitigated glory and incomparable wonder of true rock and roll.
